—  Planning and working to stay in Mendocino County for the long run ®  —

Read the General Rules for Membership:
Step 1:
5. Businesses must be majority owned by
    Mendocino County Residents, or by
residents from the six counties contiguous
    to Mendocino: Sonoma, Lake, Glen,
    Tehema, Trinity and Humbolt.

6. Individuals and groups in Sustain Local
    Mendocino must operate on the
    Precautionary Principle, adopted by the
    Mendocino County government in 2006.
This principle says that the big picture
must be taken into account in all decisions
that affect the enviornment of our county,
and the path chosen should be one that
promotes a healthy enviornment for current
    and future generations.*

7. Members shall maintain and project
a cheerful, positive attitude about the
    future.

    Sustain Local Mendocino membership is
contingent upon observing these 7 rules.
* See the full text of the Precautionary Principle at: http://www.co.mendocino.ca.us/administration/pdf/43-Precautionary%20Principle.pdf http://www.co.mendocino.ca.us/administration/pdf/43-Precautionary%20Principle.pdfhttp://www.co.mendocino.ca.us/administration/pdf/43-Precautionary%20Principle.pdfshapeimage_3_link_0
Step 2:
1. You must be actively working to promote
    the sustainability of Mendocino County.
This means taking the long view toward
increasing all our resources, both natural
    and human.

2. Your business or organization does not have
to be completely sustinable, but you do
have to be working to become more
     sustainable.

3. Sustain Local Mendocino is built on direct
    person-to-person relationships, so an
organization or business must designate one
person residing in Mendocino County to
handle all the first contacts from
    Sustain Local Mendocino. That person’s
photo should be on the website.

4. Individuals and groups in Sustain Local
    Mendocino shall promote positive
interactions which build trust and mutual
    respect.

Decide in which of the 8 categories and in which sub-category you belong. These are shown right below. If you think you need a new category or sub-category,  e-mail us with your suggestion.
Step 3:
E-mail us with your category name and your “Banner” information. The banner information should follow the standard banner format shown as a sample below. The notes on the sample banner below will help you get your information together. It does not matter if your e-mail  precisely follows the graphic format, it only has to contain all the information, in numbered sequence.   We will get the information onto the Sustain Local Mendocino website in the correct type face and so on.  If we need to edit for brevity or clarity we will e-mail or call you.
          I run a mobile dimension sawmill. I can mill logs up to 6’ diameter & 26’ long. The mill can produce lumber as small as 1/2” x  3 - 1/2”, & as large as 4” x 12”.

The mill can adjust sizes in 1/4” steps, with widths from 1/2” to 4” and heights from 3 - 1/2” to 12”. Logs can be as short as 6’.

I can mill hard or soft woods, including redwood, fir, pine, oak, chinquapin & madrone.  My saw has circular blades for truer dimensioned lumber than a bandsaw mill which “wobbles”.

I can stack and sticker the milled lumber as I mill, and seal the end grain for more even drying, if you prefer.
• Portable mill comes to your
   coastal site.

• One person opperation, but I am
willing to work with the property
owner’s help - if you don’t get in
   the way.

• Call for appointment to
   determine pricing. Price depends
on distance to site, set-up time,
size of logs (larger is more
   efficient) et cetra.

• Timber must be down and
   preferably decked. I can move
logs, but this will increase cost.

• You may find tree fallers
   elsewhere on this website.

• I highly recommend hiring a
   conscientious forester and
   logger to help you decide
   which trees to harvest.

I believe in sustainable harvesting of our timber resources. Cutting lumber from your own property means you don’t have to buy from a big corporation where you don’t know the sustainability  practices of the company. Additionally, I can chip or turn into firewood all the remaining parts of the log, minimizing waste.

Step 4: Helping this site go:
There is no basic charge to stay on this site, but the site won’t exist unless its members contribute when they can. Sustain Local Mendocino is on the honor system.  If you are a small business, we ask that you donate 2% of your profit amount for any job you obtain through Sustain Local Mendocino, with a maximum of $300 per job. If you are a larger business, you may donate directly up to $500 per year. Grants are gladly accepted. If you are a conservation or service organization there is never any charge or set up fee.

If you are a business, there is a $50 one time charge to compose your banner and post it on Sustain Local Mendocino, if you supply your own useable photos. If we supply the photos, it is $20 extra. For the first 30 businesses to join Sustain Local Mendocino, the set up and photo fee will be waived.
